Summary:
If you are planning for the future of network risks within the
enterprise to update your defenses but you lack a clear
understanding of both what worked and what failed in the past, in
all probability you are going to waste significant money, time and
effort by simply repeating past mistakes.
This presentation will take a look "Back to the Future" to
perhaps understand where we went wrong with defenses such as AV,
URL filtering, and Firewalling so attendees can better understand
the current threat environment and make better, more educated
decisions regarding their defenses. Only talking about the
problems is little more than hand-waving. Attendees will walk
away with an understanding of the new developments and technologies
that offer the ability to get a step ahead of the bad guys.
Are the security products you are using keeping up with the
evolving threats? We live in an environment where clearly we
are in an arms race with the bad guys. Let's look at brief
examples:
- Bad guys attach malware to emails
- Good guys shift AV defense focus to email attachments
- Bad guys adopt obfuscation to thwart detection
- Good guys accelerate signature creation and deployment
- Bad guys switch from embedding malware in email to including a
URL to malicious website
- Good guys expand URL filtering capability
- Bad guys use URL shortening services to obfuscate URL
- Good guys expand AV capability to protect against unknown
websites
- Bad guys switch to SSL and XML to hide from security
products
- Good guys adopt SSL and content scanning capabilities
- Bad guys stop utilizing standard ports for malware
transport
- Good guys adopt application control capability to identify any
application across any port or service
Clearly the days of standalone isolated security solutions are
over and fully integrated solutions have become a necessity.
