What is a thureon? In ancient Rome, it was the most advanced
protective technology available. For the Roman infantry, a thureon
was a door-like shield, 2½ feet by 4 feet, which soldiers held in
front of them to protect from their knees right up to their eyes.
Its size also enabled thureons to serve as stretchers, able to
carry injured soldiers off the battlefield.
